My First Open Source Conference in Asakusa!

Added:

Today I went to Open Source Conference 2026 Tokyo/Fall in Asakusa, Tokyo, for the first time!

I arrived a little late, so I wish I had gotten up earlier…💦
I also missed “Output Matters” and the lightning talks I had been looking forward to. That was a shame, but it is all part of the experience! Next time, I will read the program beforehand and give myself plenty of time.

I got to visit lots of booths!! It was great to discover unfamiliar fields and learn more about things I am already interested in! 😊

I really enjoyed chatting with someone who works at Nissan. They showed me an open source demo related to a Linux-based vehicle instrument cluster! They also mentioned using Android in their work, so I was curious about the difference and asked a few questions!

Here is my own summary of what I heard that day.

Q. The demo is Linux-based, so why do you use Android in your work?

I was told that map APIs, security, and agreements with Google are among the reasons.

Q. Could I install this OSS in my own car, for example?

It might be possible, but the vehicle might not have enough processing power, and safety and security would also present challenges.

Q. Then why did you make this kind of OSS?

Because it is fun!!

That was the answer!

I also got to join the social gathering afterward, which was great!! I met people I had not had a chance to talk to at the booths, and it was so much fun! Sharing food, drinks, and conversation really is lovely. I would love to go again! 🍻

A huge thank you to the organizers for making this possible, and to everyone who exhibited and spoke with me!! I was nervous as a first-time attendee, but everyone was so welcoming, and I was happy that people reached out to me! I would love to participate again when I get the chance!

Thanks for reading! 😊
